Bird's Eye View

From the desk of Eric Heath

Eric Heath - Headshot - 07.26

Last month, my colleague Reid Stack wrote in this space that public markets and private buyers were underwriting an earnings inflection that had not yet been reflected in most sellers' reported results. One earnings season later, that gap has closed. The Q2 2026 results across rail, LTL, truckload, and brokerage confirm what buyers had already priced: the recovery is no longer a forward bet running ahead of the fundamentals. It is in the numbers, and it is broad. For owners who have spent three years hearing that the turn was coming, this is the quarter where the public record caught up with the argument.

M&A Activity

Transportation & Logistics M&A activity climbed to 38 transactions in July, the highest monthly total of the past four months. This marks the second consecutive year of year-over-year growth for the month.

Strategic acquirers remain the most active buyer type year-to-date, accounting for 119 of the total deals tracked. PE add-ons continue to build momentum, climbing from 9 deals in June to 12 in July and reaching 73 YTD.

Technology/software continues to lead all sub-sectors year-to-date with 47 transactions, holding a narrow edge over 3PL/forwarding at 45. That momentum held in July too, with technology/software tied with equipment services as the month's most active sub-sectors at 8 deals each.
